What are the causes of women hair loss? Are they the same as hair loss in men? Knowing the causes will be helpful to understand the condition more.
Every hair follicle has four distinct phases that cycles on a regular basis namely, the growth of anagen, transition catagen, resting or telogen state, returning growth or mesanagen. A hair cycle usually lasts up to five years at the most but for some lucky individuals, two years would be enough. Thinning of the hair may be rare but it does happen when the hair is on the telogen state. The worst scenario may result to baldness at any time when a community of hair falls off from the area. Most of the time this happens gradually, but in some severe cases, it happens all at once.
Hair loss in women versus hair loss in men
The causes of hair loss in women may be different from the causes of baldness in men. Dermatologists said that hair loss is a growing problem affecting women that may occur even in an earlier age.
Experts say that hair loss can be attributed to the interruption of the growth cycle. Hair usually grows at a rate of one-half-inch per month. When the hair rests for a period of time, then it falls out, and the follicles from which it sprang starts growing a new strand.
Factors for hair loss in women
The following are some reasons why hair follicles break their normal cycle and switch into a resting phase. These are the factors why some women experience thinning of hair and thicker hair on the other parts of their bodies. The causes include any or a combination of emotional and physical state such as stress, hormonal imbalance (especially androgen sensitivity), genetics.
Some are caused by immune system irregularities including thyroid disorders, nutritional deficiencies (Iron and Vitamin A). Others may be due to cosmetic factors. Lastly, health conditions may contribute to the situation due to radiation or chemotherapy, dental treatment, blood loss, drugs, diseases, surgery and scarring.
Other causes of hair loss in women
Resting or telogen phase is temporary. To avoid the hair follicles from being shocked into the resting phase, there is a need to reduce the above-mentioned causes that contribute to thinning of hair and hair loss.
Hair is amazingly adaptive to any circumstance, which is why many scientists believe that the cure for hair loss is just around the corner. Majority of women with mild to moderate hair loss may notice big improvement by paying more attention to their stress level and their diet.
In some individual, however, a group of hormone called androgens interferes with the natural process of hair growth. Build up of DHT in the follicles causes it to fall from the surface.
Hair loss is a result of a damage follicle and unhealthy hair growth. This condition is medically known as androgenetic alopecia - the primary cause of balding in both men and women. This should be addressed properly by nourishment of the hair once it starts to grow.
